Abstract
Purpose: The prevalence of facial bone fracture in the north area of Gyeonggi-do increased recently. This study is to analyze the characteristics of facial bone fractures in the area. We collected retrospective data about facial bone fractures at the emergency center in the north area of Gyeonggi-do.

Methods: The medical records of 1513 fractures in 1300 patients between 2005 and 2007 were gathered. All data were analyzed retrospectively by the following parameters: age, sex, place of residence, occupation, cause of injury, time of injury, location of fracture, treatment method, and complications.

Results: The incidence of facial bone fractures was increased annually. Sex ratio was 2.3:1 with male predominance. Most injuries occurred in young males with the highest incidence in 10 to 20 years of age group (25.7%). Fractures were most common in students (33.8%). Among variable etiologies of injury, fall (31.5%) and violence (25.6%) were the common causes. Injury occurence peaked on weekends, in March and October. Locations of fractures followed the subsequent sequence; nasal bone, orbit, zygomatic, mandible, and maxilla. In treatment methods, operative methods were more dominant than conservative managements and general anesthesia was favored to local anesthesia. Complications were developed in 73 cases (5.6%), with nasal deformities and ocular problems being the common issues.

Conclusion: Compared to previous studies, mean age of occurrence was decreased and the etiologies showed specific pattern which reflected the characteristics of north area in Gyeonggi-do. Major portion was teenagers with the cause of not only sport injuries, but also a high proportion of violence, reflecting the seriousness of school violence and at the same time the necessity of a measure for it.
